José Carreras Farewell Gala

José Carreras Farewell Gala

José Carreras, one of the greatest tenors of our time, is bidding farewell to Vienna, his self-admitted second home, with an emotional concert performance full of stellar showstoppers. Under stripped-down piano accompaniment, the singer will take audiences on a journey through his versatile catalogue that spans several decades and includes just about every major leading role in the tenor repertoire. The José Carreras Farewell Gala at the Vienna State Opera offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the most exceptional voices in several generations of classical music taking a long and eventful trip down memory lane.

Carreras’ relationship to Vienna and Wiener Staatsoper dates back over 30 years. 1988 marked one of the most memorable evenings of his expansive career – his triumphant return to the opera stage after a battle with leukaemia – and it was the Viennese audience who got to cheer the great tenor back on. Since then, the bond between the Spanish virtuoso and the Austrian capital has only grown stronger. José Carreras sang many of his signature roles here, starting with the Duke of Mantua from Rigoletto as well as the title role in Don Carlos by Giuseppe Verdi and continuing with many of Giacomo Puccini’s signature leading men, like Cavaradossi from Tosca, Prince Calaf from Turandot, and Rodolfo from La Bohème, which earned him a sensational 45-minute standing ovation.

Turning the clock back on over 140 stellar performances at Vienna State Opera, José Carreras has a wide catalogue, from which the tunes for his Farewell Gala come. Apart from outstanding tenor arias, he will also perform enthralling duets with guest soprano Elīna Garanča. Lorenzo Bavaj will accompany on the grand piano. Known for his charitable personality, José Carreras will donate all of the concert’s proceedings to CAPE 10, an organisation that supports the sick and the needy while maintaining their dignity and acceptance in society. Even though he is saying goodbye to his beloved stage in Vienna, the great Spanish tenor has made sure he is exiting on a high note, professionally, emotionally, and personally.
