Erwin Schrott Solo Recital

Erwin Schrott Solo Recital

Tenors usually get the most fame and the biggest applause on the classical stage, but Erwin Schrott is living proof that one does not need high Cs to gain the audience’s favour. The bass-baritone has built a monumental career and a faithful following with signature roles in Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Carmen by Georges Bizet, I Lombardi alla prima crociata by Giuseppe Verdi, and L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti. The Erwin Schrott Solo Recital at Vienna State Opera demonstrates the singer’s talent and range with a selection of his classic roles as well as famous arias and songs from the bass-baritone repertoire.

Erwin Schrott feels right at home on the stage of Wiener Staatsoper. There he has appeared in leading roles in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Bizet’s Carmen, and Puccini’s Tosca. His solo recital lets audiences appreciate his art from up close, and it enables the celebrated singer to reinterpret some of his signature performances in a new arrangement and with minimal staging. The focus can thus fall squarely on the music and Schrott’s expressive delivery, which has earned him global recognition. Without the costumes, the full orchestra, and the onstage drama, the music takes the spotlight. In the star bass-baritone’s hands, the colourful combination of classical melodies that follow one another truly comes to life.

Erwin Schrott kicked off his career in opera at 22 years of age with the role of Roucher in the verismo classic Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. He participated in and won several high-profile competitions, such as ‘Carlos Gomez’, ‘Juventudes Musicales’, and most impressively ‘Operalia’. These wins paved Schrott’s way to the big opera stage where he quickly earned his reputation as a masterful interpreter of Mozart’s bass and baritone parts. Adept at both comedy and tragedy, Schrott quickly amassed a repertoire, from which his Solo Recital at Wiener Staatsoper has plenty of material to borrow. An exciting evening awaits lovers of the lower vocal register!
