Agnes Baltsa was born on the picturesque island of Lefkada, Greece. Her musical education started at an early age and brought her first to Athens and then – to Munich. The recipient of a Maria Callas Scholarship, Baltsa quickly made her mark across Western European stages. Numerous appearances at the high-profile Salzburg Festival under the auspices of Herbert von Karajan sealed her star power. Baltsa has a special connection to Vienna where she settled in the early 1970s. At the Wiener Staatsoper, she covered many of the classic mezzo-soprano roles in the repertoire. Her crowning performance is of the tragic temptress Carmen by Georges Bizet. In the role of the fiery anti-heroine, Baltsa has shared the stage with famous tenors like José Carreras and Neil Shicoff.
