Misatango, Misa a Buenos Aires
The Latin Mass sung to the melodies and rhythms of the streets of Buenos Aires - that is the magic of the contemporary Argentine composer Martín Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires, or as it is more popularly known, Misatango.
On 11 February 2017 the sound of Misatango will fill the Great Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus. A special feature of the version of Misatango that will be heard on this occasion is the open invitation made to choirs to participate in its performance. Eight choirs, and one vocal and instrumental ensemble, drawn from Austria, France and Germany, as well as from Palmeri’s native Argentina, will sing the work under the direction of Palmeri’s fellow porteño, Saul Zaks. Palmeri himself will be at the piano.
Palmeri, a multiple prizewinner, has a unique approach to choral music. His compositions infuse one of the most ancient of European traditions with the sultry mood of the Argentine tango, perhaps South America’s most popular gift to world culture. Its influence can be found in many of Palmeri’s works, including his Tango del Bicentenario, Fantasía tanguera and Concierto para bandoneón.
Ever since it was first performed in 1996, Misatango has travelled the globe, delighting audiences from Brazil to Slovakia. Its most famous outing to date was probably in 2013 when Palmeri was invited to present Misatango at the Basilica of St. Ignatius of Loyola as part of the International Festival of Sacred Music and Art in Rome and the Vatican, dedicated that year to Pope Francis.
In addition to the various ensembles joining Zaks and Palmeri, the performance of Misatango at the Wiener Konzerthaus will showcase the talents of the exciting youth chamber orchestra from Germany, Violinissimo, alongside Pablo Mainetti (bandoneon) and Carla Filipcic Holm (mezzo-soprano) who, like Palmeri, also hail from Argentina.
Misatango is the Mass as you have never heard it before, an innovative addition to the great canon of spiritual and liturgical music.
